50-year-old Nigerian citizen Jeremiah Okoye was allegedly brutally killed by
the nation's police while he was in their custody, according to the Nigerian
Citizens Association in South Africa (NICASA).

According to reports, Mr. Okoye, a native of Eziniffite Nnewi in Anambra, who resided at No. 71, Magazyn Street,
Polokwane, Limpopo Province, had lived in the country for 22 years passed away on January 13 while being held in custody in the province of Limpopo.
In
a phone chat with reporters on Friday, NICASA President-General Frank Onyekwelu
stated that inquiries were still being conducted to determine the cause of the
deceased's passing.

“We
implore the police authorities to follow the rule of law in discharging their
constitutional duties,” he said.
He
stated that after the tragic event, NICASA has gotten in touch with Mr. Okoye's
family and friends in Limpopo and formally notified the Nigerian High
Commission and Consulate in South Africa.
