On July 22, 2022, Kiena Dawes, 23, left their 9months-old daughter with a friend and committed suicide on a railway line after writing a suicide note that read, "Ryan Wellings killed me."
Jurors heard Wellings' frequent outbursts at the hairdresser, including assaulting her during her pregnancy and threatening to drill her teeth, drown her in a bathtub, and "make her look like Katie Piper" by dousing her in acid.

The defense team for Wellings maintained that the injuries Ms. Dawes sustained prior to her passing were either unintentional or the consequence of Wellings' attempts to control her.
John Jones KC, the defense attorney, told Preston Crown Court that his client was not "in any significant degree" responsible for Ms. Dawes' Death.
