Targeting Chinese exports that may be taking advantage of the exemption, the US announced a new regulation Friday to strengthen it and allow duty-free entry for low-value imports.

CHINESE IMPORTS.
Certain products are excluded from the low-value, or "de minimis,"
exemption, which permits the entry of goods into the United States for less
than $800 without the payment of tariffs or certain taxes, according to the
plan.
"Over the past decade, there has been a significant increase in the quantity and total value of low-value, or de minimis, shipments to the United States," said Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas in a statement.

As foreign goods flood US ports of entry, he continued, the exemption has
"undermined American businesses and workers" and made it more
difficult to assess the commodities for security threats.
Chinese-founded e-commerce platforms were accused by National Economic Advisor Lael Brainard of attempting to "gain an unfair trade advantage" by abusing the regulations.
President-elect Donald Trump, who assumes office next week, will be
responsible for taking further action on the issue.
