In March 2017, Danielle McLaughlin, 28, of County Donegal, was viciously raped in a remote location in Canacona, a tourist destination in Goa, and was discovered dead with serious injuries to her head and face.
Nearly eight years after the young woman's death, local resident Vikat Bhagat was found guilty on Friday at the District and Sessions Court in south Goa.
Police had detained the 31-year-old within hours of Danielle's body being found, but the case had been delayed multiple times over the years.
Justice has 'finally been achieved', according to a statement released today by her mother and sister.
Desmond Doherty, the family lawyer, released a statement. There was no other suspect or gang involved in Danielle's death and (Vikat) Bhagat was solely responsible for cruelly ending her beautiful life. According to a post-mortem study, she died as a result of neck tightness and brain injury.
According to reports, Bhagat first admitted to the murder to the police, but in May he penned a 29-page open letter in which he denied any involvement.
He said that three of his pals had slain Danielle in front of him, and that he was genuinely in love with her.
However, he said that after being beaten by police, he was coerced into incriminating himself by leaving his finger prints on beer bottles.
Hospital nurse Geeta Bhagat, his sister, defended him by claiming, "My brother is being framed."
In the letter, he told me that he told the police about three other men's participation, but they ignored him.
Instead, they requested him to touch the broken beer bottles to check for finger prints after shocking him with electricity in his leg muscles.
Baghat was found guilty today after the case was presented to court multiple times.
