An independent government organization created to protect Americans from the Wall Street abuses that led to the Great Recession is the next victim that President Donald Trump's Department of Government Efficiency is pursuing.

One day after Trump's budget chief, Russell Vought, took over as acting director and instructed staff to cease combating financial abuse, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau employees were abruptly informed Sunday afternoon that the watchdog's Washington, DC, headquarters will be closed this week and that they should work remotely.

Musk posted "CFPB RIP" on X on Friday.

The agency, which has long been a target for the GOP, appears to be headed in the same direction as the US Agency for International Development, which Musk has destroyed despite saving millions of lives and advancing democracy for decades. On Sunday,  Trump called USAID “crazy” and “a big scam.”

There are concerns that Trump is flagrantly violating the Constitution by using his unchecked executive power to shut down legally mandated agencies, fire employees, and stop expenditures that Congress has already approved.

However, Musk's position is unusual due to his unelected power. Trump and Musk's ambitions have now been temporarily halted by several courts. However, all signs point to one of the biggest battles in modern history over the extent of presidential power, which is bound for a Supreme Court with a conservative majority that views executive power broadly.

Given their erratic temperaments and need to be the dominant person in every situation, many have anticipated that Musk and Trump will end their relationship. However, Trump is not publicly displaying any signs of becoming weary of the Tesla founder, who is serving as the main driver of the president's plan for disruption and retaliation. Even a Time Magazine cover featuring Musk behind the desk in the Oval Office was dismissed by the president.

In a Super Bowl interview that aired on Fox on Sunday, Trump stated, "Elon Musk has been fantastic and has been a great help to me." Trump responded, "Trust Elon?" when asked if he trusted Musk. He's not getting anything, I see. I'm actually curious how he finds the time to do it. He's very into it.

Their partnership may last longer than most people think.
