On January 29, 2025, U.S. District Judge Brian C. Buescher sentenced Okoronkwo to 75 months in prison. The US Department of Justice issued a statement on Thursday, February 6,
“There is no parole in the federal system. After his release from prison, Okoronkwo will be placed on a 3-year term of supervised release and will be deported by immigration authorities,”
In order to get money from victims online, Edwin, a lawful permanent resident of the United States, and his wife, Julie Okoronkwo, who lives in Nebraska, engaged in "catfishing" operations.
They used fictitious online social media profiles to get victims to donate money. They identified themselves as senior American military personnel serving abroad.
Through the United States Postal Service (USPS) and other commercial carriers like FedEx and UPS, victims from all over the nation were duped into paying money.
He opened bank accounts and other online financial services accounts using the personal identifying information (PII) stolen from identity theft victims.
Julie Okoronkwo collected the victims' methods of identification, such as their social security numbers and Nebraska driver's license details, from her place of employment, a hospital, and called the "catfishing" victims to further persuade them that their need for money was legitimate.
U.S. District Judge Buescher sentenced Edwin and Julie Okoronkwo to jail on January 10, 2025.
