Today, an interactive map of England's norovirus hotspots was unveiled, showing how the vomiting illness is five times more common in some places than others.

With nearly 2,500 hospital beds occupied last week, the North East and Yorkshire have been particularly severely struck by the virus. This is 5.1 times the number of hospital beds occupied in the East of England.

It coincides with alarming data that was made public today, which revealed that the number of norovirus cases in England has once again surged to the highest level recorded in hospitals this winter.

The illness, which can also cause diarrhea, is more common nationwide now than it was at the same time last year, up 69%.

According to Dailymail Last week, the number of norovirus patients in hospitals in England increased from 898 the week before to over 960 people per day.

Authorities warned that "pressure on hospitals remain incredibly high" and advised British citizens to continue washing their hands often in order to prevent the spread of the highly contagious illness.

When it comes to a norovirus illness, most people won't need to see a doctor. Most of the time, it will resolve itself.

However, it may cause dehydration in those who are more susceptible, which could lead to hospitalization. These individuals are usually the old, young, and immunocompromised.
