Two Guatemalan men were detained by federal officials on Friday on suspicion of running one of the biggest human smuggling networks in the US both have been charged to court.
The two were apprehended close to downtown Los Angeles and are charged with smuggling 20,000 illegal immigrants from Guatemala into the US since 2019.
"These smuggling organizations have no regard for human life and their conduct kills," stated Joseph McNally, the acting U.S. attorney.
One of the biggest and most hazardous smuggling groups in the nation has been broken up by the indictment and arrests made here. Since this work saves lives, the organization's members will now have to deal with serious repercussions.
Both Eduardo Domingo Renoj-Matul and Cristobal Mejia-Chaj to be kept without bond when they appeared in federal court a few hours after their arrests. They could all be executed if found guilty.
